Always Be Prepared for Dangerous Wildfires That Can Burn Down Your House

Wildfires continue to rage across the United States Southern States and officials have now confirmed 11 deaths due to the fires.  Heavy rains did help firefighters in the Great Smoky Mountains and the fires are about 10% contained and have burned 17,000 acres of forest.

The wildfires have caused large blackouts and 8,500 people are still without power in Tennessee. Search crews have found quite a few of the 70 people that were missing.  In Sevier County, there has been large losses of property.  An estimated 700 structures have been destroyed and about 300 of them were in the city of Gatlinburg.  As many as 14,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes.
Dollywood which is a theme park named after Country Music Star Dolly Parton was threatened by these fires but luckily was not damaged as the fires crept up close.

As a Prepper, you should always be prepared for wildfires that can destroy your house if you live anywhere close to a large forest.  Be prepared for power outages that can last up to a week, have bug-out bags ready in case you have to evacuate quickly, and have a plan as to where you will go.

Sometimes if you wait out fires the winds pick up and the fire spreads faster than firefighters realize and they don't have time to notify all of the people.  It is never smart to stay put when firefighters recommend that you evacuate.

When I was working for the Federal Government as a Seasonal Fisheries Technician, a large fire caused by lightning erupted close to a primitive campground that I was at.  I had to evacuate quickly and although the fire did not hit the campground it was pretty close and the thick stench of burning conifers was present throughout the campground.   It was a slow drive out as numerous fire trucks and personnel were moving in to ambush the fire.  Wildfires burn very hot and can cross a road almost instantly.  When winds blow flames across a road believe me you don't want to be driving by.  Cars will explode in an instant.  Also, it is possible that if you are by a wildfire that you get sprayed by chemical drift from the overhead firefighting aircraft.  The fire retardant is not supposed to be harmful to humans and other animals but who really knows?

If a serious disaster strikes that paralyzes your city you should think seriously about bugging out. Our group has a designated meeting area in the middle of nowhere just in case this happens.  If you want to be part of our group, just fill in our contact form to the right.

Our meeting area has been chosen for a lot of factors and will get us through a long time.  There are the necessities of life such as clean water, an ample supply of wild food both vegetative and game and plenty of wood for fires and lodging.

Remember that the United States only has a three day supply of food in the supermarkets at any one time.  But we're skeptical about this.  Can you imagine the looting that will occur after day one?  People are going to kill for food and if you are a Prepper you don't want to be unprepared without food and having to chance going to a supermarket to get it.

Also, if you are one that has decided to hunker down and wait out a disaster you should have plenty of food on hand.  One of the problems with this is that once everybody else runs out of food they are going to be breaking into your house to get it.

Power outages are going to render the gas stations useless.  If you have a full tank of gas in your car you might be able to get a few hundred miles but most likely the National Guard will block highways and try to keep people in the cities.  A more efficient way to travel is a mountain bike with a spare inner tube and patch kit in your bug-out bag.

If you don't have a bike, make sure you have a good bug-out bag and can take off at a minutes notice. Being a Prepper means that you are prepared for a disaster to happen.  So always have a plan just in case.

Are You Preparing for Disasters?

The whole thought about being a doomsday prepper is unnerving.  It is much easier to just go into a state of ignorance where you don't think about all of the horrible things that can ultimately affect the immediate survival of you and your loved ones.

But the threats are real and it is a good idea to be prepared for catastrophes that could happen at anytime.  Below are some of the things you should be aware of if a large solar flare, which is overdue, hits the earth.  A solar flare is a huge ejection of energy and particles from the sun into space.  They can be very large and greatly affect the earth.  Small flares have hit the earth recently in past years.

A large solar flare known as a "Coronal Mass Ejection" can send a huge quantity of radiation into our atmosphere which would then affect our atmosphere by pulling electrons out of atom particles. When this happens, it creates a huge Electromagnetic Pulse which could potentially knock out all of the power on planet Earth.

In 1859 a very large Coronal Mass Ejection hit the earth and caused telegraph systems in Europe and the United States to fail and some telegraph operators were even shocked.  This occurrence was known as the "Carrington Event" and if one this large occurred today it would have grave results on the power grid.

Unfortunately, we are overdue for an event like the Carrington.  One almost hit the United States on July 23, 2012 but missed us.  It took until April 28, 2014 for NASA to release this information to the public.  What does that mean?  The government is not going to warn us before it happens.  And if they do, it is going to be too late to go to the stores and get supplies to tie you over until the power comes back on weeks or maybe months later.

In 1989, a smaller solar storm hit Quebec in Canada and knocked their power out for approximately 9 hours.  It only took the solar hit 2 minutes to wipe out Quebec's power grid.  New York Power was affected also but not nearly as severe.

Some people go crazy when the power goes out and as a prepper you should prepare for this.  On July 13 and 14 of 1977, New York City lost their power but not due to a solar storm.  Many people took to the streets and there was widespread looting and rioting.  Can you imagine what would happen if the power goes out for days across different countries?

Doomsday Preppers Should Be Prepared for the Long Haul

When preparing for doomsday, doomsday preppers should prepare for the long haul. One of the more important things to consider is how will you obtain food once your food supply is depleted.

You can bet that all of the food in grocery stores will disappear quickly once chaos begins. If you have a food store, you can live on this for awhile but eventually it will run out. This will mean that you now will have to grow food, hunt and kill animals for food, or catch animals for food. If you do not have weapons and have never hunted or if you have run out of bullets for your hunting weapons, you can fish for food or you can catch animals by using traps or snares. Leghold traps are pretty bulky but will come in handy at your base camp. Live traps, like Havahart traps are pretty expensive but also can be used to catch a variety of wild animals.

Snares are pretty light so you can have a couple in your bug-out bag. If you don't have room in your survival bag, you can store your traps and snares at your base camp. Catching animals with a snare is an art that is acquired through a lot of practice. However, it is effective and once chaos hits using snares can possibly save your life. If you are going to buy snares, I recommend 30 inch to 36 inch light wire snares designed to catch small animals like rabbits.

Remember to have fishing line and hooks in your bug-out bag. And, of course, you should have a sharp knife. With your knife, you can make a pretty good fishing pole out of a tree branch. To do this, you want to whittle the bark off of the tip (last few inches) of a 6 foot long branch. You then take your knife and cut straight down into the whittled off section and create a cut groove all the way around the branch. You then take your fishing line and wind it around the groove several times. Tie your hook on and find something for bait and you are ready to catch fish.

If you are in the woods, one of the easiest animals to catch for food is the porcupine. It's not that a porcupine is slow but rather it really is not too afraid of humans. You can walk right up to them and then they sense your presence and they stop and stiffen up their quills. One sharp blow to their head with a sturdy stick and you have a meal.

If you are lucky to have farmable land, you certainly can grow your own vegetables. It won't be easy though if there is no more gasoline to run power equipment. You will need shovels or hoes or even a hatchet so that you can break up grass sod to plant your seeds.

Every doomsday prepper should have stored seeds for vegetables that they like. These seeds should not be the ones you buy at regular stores but instead should be stored properly so that they last years.



If you catch fish or animals for food, chances are you would like to cook them and you should. By cooking your animals, you get rid of potentially dangerous bacteria or disease they may carry.
