Doomsday Preppers Should Be Prepared for the Long Haul

When preparing for doomsday, doomsday preppers should prepare for the long haul. One of the more important things to consider is how will you obtain food once your food supply is depleted.

You can bet that all of the food in grocery stores will disappear quickly once chaos begins. If you have a food store, you can live on this for awhile but eventually it will run out. This will mean that you now will have to grow food, hunt and kill animals for food, or catch animals for food. If you do not have weapons and have never hunted or if you have run out of bullets for your hunting weapons, you can fish for food or you can catch animals by using traps or snares. Leghold traps are pretty bulky but will come in handy at your base camp. Live traps, like Havahart traps are pretty expensive but also can be used to catch a variety of wild animals.

Snares are pretty light so you can have a couple in your bug-out bag. If you don't have room in your survival bag, you can store your traps and snares at your base camp. Catching animals with a snare is an art that is acquired through a lot of practice. However, it is effective and once chaos hits using snares can possibly save your life. If you are going to buy snares, I recommend 30 inch to 36 inch light wire snares designed to catch small animals like rabbits.

Remember to have fishing line and hooks in your bug-out bag. And, of course, you should have a sharp knife. With your knife, you can make a pretty good fishing pole out of a tree branch. To do this, you want to whittle the bark off of the tip (last few inches) of a 6 foot long branch. You then take your knife and cut straight down into the whittled off section and create a cut groove all the way around the branch. You then take your fishing line and wind it around the groove several times. Tie your hook on and find something for bait and you are ready to catch fish.

If you are in the woods, one of the easiest animals to catch for food is the porcupine. It's not that a porcupine is slow but rather it really is not too afraid of humans. You can walk right up to them and then they sense your presence and they stop and stiffen up their quills. One sharp blow to their head with a sturdy stick and you have a meal.

If you are lucky to have farmable land, you certainly can grow your own vegetables. It won't be easy though if there is no more gasoline to run power equipment. You will need shovels or hoes or even a hatchet so that you can break up grass sod to plant your seeds.

Every doomsday prepper should have stored seeds for vegetables that they like. These seeds should not be the ones you buy at regular stores but instead should be stored properly so that they last years.

Emergency Backpacks - Items That Should Be in Your Bags

Bug-out bags can be purchased all ready to use or they can be individually made by their owners. In this post, I will recommend items that should be in your bug-out bags.


Food should definitely be in your Survival Bag." Remember, preparation is key and you should have an idea ahead of time of about how much food you might need. For example, if you are bugging out to the country, you should have enough food to get you to your base camp. Your food should be lightweight, preferably in mylar bags. It should also have a long shelf life so that when you grab your bag, your food is not expired and it still tastes good.


Another definite item you should have in your bug-out bag is some kind of flashlight. I prefer the flashlights you wear around your head so that your arms and hands are free in case you need to grab a knife or gun out of your pocket for protection against people that may threaten you. Make sure you get one that has colored lights also. The colored lights do not attract bugs like the bright white light does. This is very beneficial if you are traveling at night by streams where mosquitoes are or in the woods where there are all kinds of bugs that will fly into the white light.

Make sure you have extra batteries which should also be in your bug-out bag. This headlamp takes 3 AAA alkaline batteries. If you buy 20 you will get the best deal. I recommend that you have at least 20 extra batteries so that you can travel at night for about a week without your headlamp going out. Here is a great deal on batteries:

Another item that is essential to any survival bag is a first-aid kit. Most first-aid kits bought from department stores will do the trick for small wounds you may encounter on your way to your base. The Red Cross has a nice one that contains most everything you will need.

You should also have a water bottle or small canteen in your bug-out bag. Make sure you keep it filled so that if your water supply is not working, you at least have some fresh water for a little while. The bottle will do you no good if it is empty when a terrorist attack occurs and your local water supply is tainted.

Which brings me to another very important item to have: a water purification system. You will need one that is small and lightweight. I would say that the items I have described are the essentials that should be in your survival gear bags. There are a lot of other items that can be put in your bags but let's think for a minute. If you have enough food and water, you can keep going to your destination. Everything else is secondary. Some other items that you might want to include are quick protein snacks like beef jerky. Most of the packaged foods in your survival bag require water for hydration. Beef jerky is nice because as you are traveling you can quickly grab some to keep you going. The one thing to note about beef jerky is that the shelf life is not that long. For this reason, I recommend that you periodically eat your supply and reorder more. This way, when a disaster occurs you will have fresh, tasty, jerky in your survival bag. If you like all-natural jerky, this is a great deal.

Don't forget, you will also need a metal or plastic mug in your bag along with silverware so that you can eat your meals.

This mug/bowl is really a good one to have. You can drink out of the mug and eat out of the bowl and then snap the two back together into one piece. This one comes with a lifetime guarantee and is great cause it takes up about one-half the space in your backpack.
The list of possible items you can put in your emergency bag is virtually endless. But one of the more important things is a fire starter to keep you warm if it is cold outside when you take off. The following is a very nice one that is very affordable. It is good for literally hundreds of fires so it will do the job for you in time of crises:

In this post, I believe I have covered the essentials of the items that should be in an emergency survival bag. A list of other items you may want in your bag if there is room is:

1. Fishing hooks and line. Fish are very high in protein and if you pass a pond or stream, you can tie your fishing line to a sturdy branch and catch some fish.
2.a whistle-if you are bugging-out with friends or family, you don't want one of you to get lost. A whistle can save your life as it emits a much higher pitch than you can by yelling or screaming.
3.Gloves-It really sucks when your hands get cold and you can't feel your fingers.
4.Shoelaces-Your feet are going to be very important when you bug-out. If you can't keep your shoes on, it's going to slow you down immensely. Shoelaces often break when they get wet or snagged on vegetation. An extra pair or two will save your feet.
5. Toilet paper for the obvious reason and also if it is wet outside you can use some to start a fire.
6. Playing cards-If it is a minor catastrophe and you need evacuate, playing cards are nice to occupy your time while you are waiting in a shelter or location for friends or family to pick you up.

Like I said before, there are countless items you can put in your bug-out bag. There are probably items that you definitely want in your bag in addition to the items I have listed. Feel free to post your recommendations in the comment section of this post.

Ham Radio Operators - The Lifeline in Chaos.

In time of chaos, Amateur Radio Operators can get your messages out to people you are trying to locate. Amateur Radio Operators, also known as "Hams" or Ham Operators are licensed radio operators that assist in time of emergencies. If cell phone towers go down which is likely due to millions of customers overloading the system during an emergency; you should seek out a Ham Operator to help you get your messages out. Cell phone towers can be wiped out by floods, earthquakes, nuclear explosions, hurricanes, tsunami's or tornados. When this happens, the local Ham Operators are ready to assist. We are very lucky to have a member who is a licensed Ham Operator. I interviewed him the other day and he explained to me in great detail how the "Hams" will help out.

Let's say that you are on a business trip to New York City when a huge earthquake hits your hometown in California. You cannot reach your wife by cell phone because the towers are overloaded. At this point, you should go to a Ham Operator in New York City. The Ham Operator will take your message and radio call to any Ham Operator near your hometown in California. The Ham Operator will then have somebody take your message to your home in California. Your wife can then relay a message back to you through the same Ham Operators. There is approximately 700,000 Ham Operators in the USA. And, there are thousands of different frequencies that they can use. This prevents the system from getting clogged up in time of emergency. Each Ham is licensed and has a distinct call sign that they use. If you don't personally know a Ham Operator, it is in your best interest to locate one close to where you live. That way, you can avoid the lengthy lines that will form at all of the Ham Operator stations when a big emergency occurs. You can get there first and get your messages out quickly. You can locate a Ham that is close to you by doing a license search. Go to The National Association for Amateur Radio and simply type in your city and zip code. Remember to do this before the emergency occurs and be prepared.

Roughly 88% of Guns are Not Registered.

According to my last post, roughly 88% of guns are not registered. What does this mean to you? When Martial Law is incorporated after the next big terrorist attack or natural disaster, the US government may go around rounding up "registered weapons". If they do this, though, there will still be millions of guns out there belonging to those people who either illegally did not register their weapons or had their weapons before registration laws took effect. If you legally own firearms, in time of Martial Law, your weapons may be taken away from you. The government may do this so that they can crack down on all of the other weapons floating around.

Can you imagine the day when the government is trying to take away guns from law abiding citizens while 88% of the guns in circulation could be in the hands of felons or other dangerous people? For this reason, it is very important that guns are not taken away from law abiding citizens. Otherwise, we are at the mercy of criminals who would stomp into our houses and rob us blind. And then, they quite possibly could just waste us! I certainly am not advocating fighting the US government. What I am advocating is to be totally prepared for the day when this happens. If you live in a city and you do not have weapons, you may be a very easy target for all of the criminals in your city that have weapons that are not registered. Like I said before, your best bet is to know exactly where you are heading when chaos ensues. If you are just roaming around with thousands of other people with only a bug-out bag on your shoulder, you probably won't make it very long before someone takes your bag. Have a plan and head out to land in the country. Let the cities fall apart.

USA Is the Most Armed Country in the World.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies. About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said. "There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide.

Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said. India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people. Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.

On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38. France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people. "Firearms are very unevenly distributed around the world. The image we have of certain regions such as Africa or Latin America being awash with weapons -- these images are certainly misleading," Small Arms Survey director Keith Krause said. "Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income," he told a Geneva news conference.

The report, which relied on government data, surveys and media reports to estimate the size of world arsenals, estimated there were 650 million civilian firearms worldwide, and 225 million held by law enforcement and military forces. Five years ago, the Small Arms Survey had estimated there were a total of just 640 million firearms globally. "Civilian holdings of weapons worldwide are much larger than we previously believed," Krause said, attributing the increase largely to better research and more data on weapon distribution networks. Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities.

Be Prepared to Bolt!

Many people have bug out bags ready for when a disaster strikes. Bug out bags are a good thing to have, however, do you know where you are going to head to when you grab your bug out bag? Chances are, in the event of a major terrorist attack, the government will incorporate Martial Law.

If they do this, here are a couple of things to consider: 1. Phone service may be shut off. 2. All roads leading into and out of your city may be closed. 3. The government would have the power to confiscate your weapons in order to try to maintain civility. It is very important that you know beforehand where you are going to head when chaos occurs. You may have to walk or bike many miles. Gasoline stations could be closed rendering travel by vehicle virtually useless. You will be much safer if you can become part of a group that is already prepared. That way, the only thing you have to think about is getting to the predestined location. So remember, keep a bug out bag handy but have a plan of action as to where you are going to go when chaos strikes.
