Doomsday Preppers Should Be Prepared for the Long Haul

When preparing for doomsday, doomsday preppers should prepare for the long haul. One of the more important things to consider is how will you obtain food once your food supply is depleted.

You can bet that all of the food in grocery stores will disappear quickly once chaos begins. If you have a food store, you can live on this for awhile but eventually it will run out. This will mean that you now will have to grow food, hunt and kill animals for food, or catch animals for food. If you do not have weapons and have never hunted or if you have run out of bullets for your hunting weapons, you can fish for food or you can catch animals by using traps or snares. Leghold traps are pretty bulky but will come in handy at your base camp. Live traps, like Havahart traps are pretty expensive but also can be used to catch a variety of wild animals.

Snares are pretty light so you can have a couple in your bug-out bag. If you don't have room in your survival bag, you can store your traps and snares at your base camp. Catching animals with a snare is an art that is acquired through a lot of practice. However, it is effective and once chaos hits using snares can possibly save your life. If you are going to buy snares, I recommend 30 inch to 36 inch light wire snares designed to catch small animals like rabbits.

Remember to have fishing line and hooks in your bug-out bag. And, of course, you should have a sharp knife. With your knife, you can make a pretty good fishing pole out of a tree branch. To do this, you want to whittle the bark off of the tip (last few inches) of a 6 foot long branch. You then take your knife and cut straight down into the whittled off section and create a cut groove all the way around the branch. You then take your fishing line and wind it around the groove several times. Tie your hook on and find something for bait and you are ready to catch fish.

If you are in the woods, one of the easiest animals to catch for food is the porcupine. It's not that a porcupine is slow but rather it really is not too afraid of humans. You can walk right up to them and then they sense your presence and they stop and stiffen up their quills. One sharp blow to their head with a sturdy stick and you have a meal.

If you are lucky to have farmable land, you certainly can grow your own vegetables. It won't be easy though if there is no more gasoline to run power equipment. You will need shovels or hoes or even a hatchet so that you can break up grass sod to plant your seeds.

Every doomsday prepper should have stored seeds for vegetables that they like. These seeds should not be the ones you buy at regular stores but instead should be stored properly so that they last years.

Ham Radio Operators - The Lifeline in Chaos.

In time of chaos, Amateur Radio Operators can get your messages out to people you are trying to locate. Amateur Radio Operators, also known as "Hams" or Ham Operators are licensed radio operators that assist in time of emergencies. If cell phone towers go down which is likely due to millions of customers overloading the system during an emergency; you should seek out a Ham Operator to help you get your messages out. Cell phone towers can be wiped out by floods, earthquakes, nuclear explosions, hurricanes, tsunami's or tornados. When this happens, the local Ham Operators are ready to assist. We are very lucky to have a member who is a licensed Ham Operator. I interviewed him the other day and he explained to me in great detail how the "Hams" will help out.

Let's say that you are on a business trip to New York City when a huge earthquake hits your hometown in California. You cannot reach your wife by cell phone because the towers are overloaded. At this point, you should go to a Ham Operator in New York City. The Ham Operator will take your message and radio call to any Ham Operator near your hometown in California. The Ham Operator will then have somebody take your message to your home in California. Your wife can then relay a message back to you through the same Ham Operators. There is approximately 700,000 Ham Operators in the USA. And, there are thousands of different frequencies that they can use. This prevents the system from getting clogged up in time of emergency. Each Ham is licensed and has a distinct call sign that they use. If you don't personally know a Ham Operator, it is in your best interest to locate one close to where you live. That way, you can avoid the lengthy lines that will form at all of the Ham Operator stations when a big emergency occurs. You can get there first and get your messages out quickly. You can locate a Ham that is close to you by doing a license search. Go to The National Association for Amateur Radio and simply type in your city and zip code. Remember to do this before the emergency occurs and be prepared.

Roughly 88% of Guns are Not Registered.

According to my last post, roughly 88% of guns are not registered. What does this mean to you? When Martial Law is incorporated after the next big terrorist attack or natural disaster, the US government may go around rounding up "registered weapons". If they do this, though, there will still be millions of guns out there belonging to those people who either illegally did not register their weapons or had their weapons before registration laws took effect. If you legally own firearms, in time of Martial Law, your weapons may be taken away from you. The government may do this so that they can crack down on all of the other weapons floating around.

Can you imagine the day when the government is trying to take away guns from law abiding citizens while 88% of the guns in circulation could be in the hands of felons or other dangerous people? For this reason, it is very important that guns are not taken away from law abiding citizens. Otherwise, we are at the mercy of criminals who would stomp into our houses and rob us blind. And then, they quite possibly could just waste us! I certainly am not advocating fighting the US government. What I am advocating is to be totally prepared for the day when this happens. If you live in a city and you do not have weapons, you may be a very easy target for all of the criminals in your city that have weapons that are not registered. Like I said before, your best bet is to know exactly where you are heading when chaos ensues. If you are just roaming around with thousands of other people with only a bug-out bag on your shoulder, you probably won't make it very long before someone takes your bag. Have a plan and head out to land in the country. Let the cities fall apart.
